Hello there!

I’ve had some ideas for a while to create something kind of new, and I think it might be a good time to start working on them. I’m planning to create three compilations of Queen-related rarities, and it’d be great if a few Queenzoners could provide both their input and recordings to them in order to make a much nicer product and become our own collective contribution, different to those made by some hard-working fans on their own.

1 - The Covers collection

This is the easy one. I’ve had this idea for the last couple years but I never got around to making it myself. I realized that there might be enough to make nearly a whole CD worth of covers by Roger Taylor since he’s released quite a few over the years. Then I thought that Brian has his fair share of covers too, and then there’s things like The Great Pretender and even some live tracks by Queen from other artists.

- A two/three-disc compilation, featuring all available non-Queen songs performed by Queen members.
- Some fun bonus tracks could be Queen covers by other artists.

2 - The QueenZone collection (curated rarities by our community)

The hard one. I’d love for this one to be our very own bootleg for the community, and I think there’s a very good chance we can create a nice compilation. My vision for this is to achieve a good balance of high quality (musically speaking) material among the least known recordings, so that average or even experienced fans will be pleasantly surprised by what’s out there besides the main 15 albums.

- No more than 3 discs worth of tracks (maybe an additional one for solo material). This will prevent us from including every B-side and whatnot. By no means this will be an exercise in completionism, hence the hard limit.

- I’d prefer not to include anything that has been released officially, but perhaps exceptions can be made (some releases are no longer in print). Up to discussion anyway.

- This will require informal discussion and voting as to what is the "best" music out there. The goal is to create something that compiles the most interesting material for fans to enjoy for years to come.

3 - The Unusual Collection

More details on this one soon! I plan to do this mostly myself, but it would be great if I could get some help getting better sources than the ones I have – on top of cool suggestions for the track list. No promises on actual rarities for the seasoned collectors, but I think this will be fun regardless. While it will be aimed at the most avid fans, just don’t get your hopes up!

I’m aware that there could be some material in these compilations that might make Queen Productions raise an eyebrow, so I’d love to have as much help as possible. Bear in mind this is not a money-making scheme, but a means to provide something worth our while, and to make a stand as Queen fans for the kind of product we’d want to be officially released.

As for how long this can take, I’m sure we can create something fairly soon provided that we have a few collectors and fans on board to help with ideas and sources. The sooner we get on board, the better!

Please let me know what you think!

Sounds interesting. I don't have the resources, but Queen's LIVE covers have almost always been bad. Excluding Jailhouse Rock, Hello Mary Lou *and Big Spender

On the other hand. Would Brian's appearances on old songs with Motorhead and Jerry Lee Lewis count?

Their cover on immigrant songs sounds like their live 1986 version of 7 seas of Rhye. Similar drum beat and bass

The show that this was played at (LA 12-22-77) was released a few months ago on Dimeadozen.org.

Wait, is this freely available? Specifically, White Christmas?

EDIT: Holy shit, now I found it. I had no idea this had surfaced so recently, I'm way out of the loop. Cool stuff!

I've made a 28 volume set 2 years ago filled with 12 inches, b-sides, reels, outtakes, solo related, single mixes, demo and special live stuff. Every now and then the tracklisting changes but i'm pretty pleased with it. All it took was a year and some good trust.

Haha, wow. You can probably contribute a lot to any of the three projects. I'm dealing with about 80 GB of studio recordings in various formats and it's going to take a while to extract what I'm looking for, and hopefully upgrade and add a number of things.

I think it will be best to create individual threads when the time comes, and a collaborations compilation is long overdue too.

4 - The Collaborations collection (QueenZone curated compilation)

- Limited to 1 or 2 discs in order to compile the best tracks (1 per artist - exceptions allowed)
- This is meant to omit those that can be easily found on official releases, but exceptions may be in order.
- Bonus: collaborations from other artists in songs performed by Queen(+) (mostly live performances, there are lots of them in great quality)

Bump! A couple things:

1 - A fifth idea was mused in the Announce section:

5 - QueenZone's Opera Omnia

A collection of every song performed live by Queen.

- A QueenZone expert can lead the project, but any other members can have their input too.
- One song version only! Exceptions can be made upon reaching consensus.
- Some medleys can be conflictive regarding the previous rule. Consensus required!
- Bonus: solo performances.

2 - I'm done compiling tracks for my Unusual collection! Some facts:

- I decided to unify my archives (that includes everything I can have in digital form) as a personal project in order to properly preserve everything I own (still months of work ahead). I went through several hard drives and about 400 disks, both originals and CDr. Some things were very sparse. Including some duplicates, I think it totals about 80 GB of Queen related music (studio recordings mostly), accounting for lossy and lossless sources.

- I destroyed a TON of crap (degraded disks, poor quality recordings, etc.). I got a lot of free space at home in return! Funny how a collector gathers so much clutter in no time, and that needs to be managed.

- There's 248 files I've compiled for this project. I think I will trim this down to about 40-50 tracks at most when all is said and done.

- Next step: I'm not sure about the origins of some recordings, so I will upload them here in order to clarify things. I think I can do that tomorrow.

- Next step after that: I'm hoping to upload my compilation a week or two from now. It'll just be the first version, since as I mentioned, I want this to be a collaborative project where other collectors can provide interesting additions and better sources than the ones I have.

- Bonus: while going through some Roger tracks, an album tag claimed to be a bootleg titled "Mr. Taylor goes to a clambake". Good fun.

Again, don't get too excited because I'm sure there aren't actual, never before heard rarities. Still, I think some moderately experienced collectors might be surprised. In the end, I'm just doing this for everybody's fun. I'm also tidying things up in the meantime, as all my Queen stuff is not conveniently compiled at the moment. I was surprised to find a few things I didn't remember.

For CD 1, include the SNAFF from either Stuttgart 1984 or Japan 1985

Yay, "The Unusual Collection" is complete! 5 volumes, 150 tracks, 8+ hours of crap! OK, hopefully there is decent stuff in there as well.
